Mom Update
Just wanted to throw out a little update on my mom. She's doing well, recooperating nicely, and we hope to have her home possibly Wednesday. She finally got to eat something on Monday...pink jello and juice. She said the hospital must really be getting racy to be handing out pink jello!! Poor lady, this is the first thing she's had to eat in 6 days. And trust me, at 103 lbs, she doesn't have a lot of room to spare! I told her I'd donate, but...
Anyhoo, for now, (knock on wood) she's doing very well, perky, spunky, bright eyed and bushy tailed. Now we just need to get her home so I can lavish even more love and attention on her!! Not to mention some GOOD food. No more of this pink jello crap!!! :)

Twenty One was an American game show. It included the most popular contestant of the quiz show era, but it achieved notoriety for being a rigged quiz show which nearly caused the demise of the entire genre in the wake of Senate investigations. The 1994 movie Quiz Show is based on these events. In time, Twenty-One represented the longest hiatus (42 years) between a cancellation and a revived comeback of a television game show on the same network in the history of broadcasting.
The initial broadcast of Twenty One was played honestly, with no manipulation of the game by the producers. Unfortunately, that broadcast was, in the words of producer Dan Enright, "a dismal failure"; the first two contestants succeeded only in making a mockery of the format by how little they really knew. So, where are we now? Ah yes, 24.
Just for reference, during this shopping season, 24-carat gold is pure gold. There are no metal alloys added. As explained by http://24carat.co.uk:
"A carat as applied to gold alloys means a proportion by weight of one part in twenty-four, or 41.66 parts per 1000. The higher the carat value, the higher the proportion of gold in relation to the base metal content. Pure gold is therefore 24 carat."
So keep that in mind when you're shopping for me this year...

Family Emergency
Sorry to be out of touch lately. We've had a family emergency and I have been otherwise occupied. Back in October, my mom was having a bad time with her foot. It was infected and not getting any better. My husband and I decided we needed to act fast on Tuesday, because it had gotten a lot worse from just Sunday night and it was UGLY. She had angry red blotches and huge blisters that developed overnight.
We took her to the emergency room down in Duluth, about an hour's drive, Tuesday afternoon. The ER dr was taking cultures and was thinking flesh eating bacteria. He panicked. There was an orthopedic surgeon that wanted to amputate her foot if that infection didn't improve within three hours. Well, we made it through that night with high high high doses of intreveneous antibiotics, and since the infection didn't spread, there wasn't an immediate threat of amputation. She has poor circulation in her legs, which wasn't allowing the antibiotics to flow to the foot before. So she had a major surgery on Thursday, a bipass in her aeorta in her abdomen and a veinal (sp) bipass down her one leg. She came through it just fine, she is doing great.
She'll be in the hospital probably another week. But, right now she is great and no more threat of amputations for the moment. IF it should happen, it would only most likely be a toe, not the foot, too. So......PHEW. It's been a rough week.
It looks like she won't be able to come along to Vietnam to get her granddaughter, when the time comes, but if things hold the way they are, she WILL be able to chase after her grandbaby with much more vigor and energy than before!!! THAT'S the most important thing, anyway. But, IF the CFD/Referral Faeiries are reading this, I have a feeling she'd get a huge lift seeing a photo of her newest granddaughter for the first time! Hint Hint.........

Here's a little history of Baskin Robbins, from my favorite Wikipedia:
Baskin-Robbins is known for its "31 flavors" slogan. When the first Baskin-Robbins store opened, it offered 21 flavors, an innovative concept at the time. The idea for having 31 flavors came from the Carson-Roberts advertising agency (which later became Ogilvy & Mather) in 1953, along with the slogan "Count the Flavors. Where flavor counts." 31 was also more than the 28 flavors then famously offered at Howard Johnson's restaurants. Burt and Irv also believed that people should be able to sample flavors until they found one they wanted to buy ― hence the iconic small pink spoon.
By 1948, Burt & Irv opened six stores, the first franchise covering the sale of ice cream was executed May 20, 1948, for the store at 1130 South Adams in Glendale (Store #1). Burt and irv were brother in laws. In 1949, the company’s own production facility opened in Burbank. They made the decision to sell the stores to the managers, thus becoming one of the first franchised food service businesses[citation needed]. In 1953, Baskin-Robbins hired Carson-Roberts Advertising (now Ogilvy & Mather) who recommended adoption of the 31 as well as the pink (cherry) and brown (chocolate) polka dots and typeface that were reminiscent of the circus. Lyons and Co. purchased Baskin-Robbins from United Brands and all the public stock. J. Lyons then merged with Allied Breweries, becoming Allied-Lyons in 1978. Interesting new game I found out about...
The 43-Man Squamish
In case you'd like to play the game when you get together with family and friends for the holidays, here are the rules:
Before any game, the Probate Judge must first flip a coin, usually a new Spanish peseta, while the Visiting Captain guesses the toss. If he guesses correctly, the game is cancelled immediately. If not, the Home Team Captain must then decide if he wishes to play offense or defense first. Play begins after a frullip is touched to the flutney and the recitation "My uncle is sick but the highway is green!" is intoned in Spanish. Penalties are applied for infractions such as walling the Pritz, icing on fifth snivel, running with the mob, rushing the season, inability to face facts, and sending the Dummy home early.
The offensive team has five Snivels (equivalent to downs in American football) to advance to the enemy goal. Carrying the Pritz across the goal line is a Woomik and scores 17 points; hitting it across with the frullip counts as a Durmish and only scores 11 points. Except in the 7th Ogre (and the 8th, if it rains), only the offensive Niblings and Overblats are allowed to score. In this case, the four Quarter-Frummerts are allowed to kick or throw the Pritz, and the nine Finks are allowed to heckle the opposition by doing imitations of Barry Goldwater.
The teams are to play a sudden-death overtime to break a tie, unless both Left Overblats are out of the game on personal fouls. If this is the case, the tie is settled by the teams lining up on opposite sides of the flutney and shouting dirty limericks at each other until one side breaks up laughing.
When an insufficient number of players precludes a regulation 43-man squamish match, a simplified version may be played: 2-man squamish. The rules are the same, except in 2-man squamish, the object is to lose.
So, before you start wondering what I've been smoking...this game was invented in Issue #95 of MAD Magazine (June 1965) by George Woodbridge and Tom Koch. It was published in the "There's a Soccer Born Every Minute Dept." ;) And yes, it was written to be completely unplayable! Funny, eh?

Good for the Soul
So, a week ago, Mike and I volunteered to pick up Angela's daddy at the airport in Minneapolis, about a four hour drive from us. Since his flight got in early Monday morning from China, we thought we'd drive down Sunday, take Angela with us, and stay at a hotel with a pool. We had a great time.
I think I'll have to make a couple posts about our trip, but I have to share the one incident that honestly brought me to tears. I got Angela ready for the pool and then went in the bathroom to put my swimsuit on. I'm standing in the bathroom in front of the mirror thinking, "Yuck." Yeah, I'm fluffy, and swimsuits are NOT my favorite thing in the world.
Before I left the bathroom, I'm thinking to myself, 'Gee...I wonder what Angela's going to say...her mom is such a tiny little thing!!!' But, I opened the door and braced myself for a sassy comment. She was standing right outside the door, took one look at me and said without any hesitation, "You're BEAUTYFUL!!!!!"
Still gives me tears...Damn, she's good for the soul!!!

I have a couple of fun points today about the number 51:
The number of the fire station and rescue engine in the TV series Emergency! I get a kick out of the repeats of this show. Also, one of my hubby's good friends actually owns a fire engine #51 that is the same kind as one used in the show! And for those of you that don't know, we also own our own fire truck. It's a FDNY Ladder truck #17. We drive it in parades, take it to car shows, etc. One day soon I'll post some photos of it! In a couple parades, we have teamed up with Engine 51. My husband also has a good friend who owns an older type ambulance...think the Ghostbusters car. And, that, too, has been in parades with us. We have our own little emergency response group, and yeah, I think we're all eccentric!! :)
One more point about the number #51 is, of course, relating to the infamous Area 51. I decided to mention this, too, because I found a great website that explains the area...but not in a kooky, Comic Book Man type of way. It's found at: http://science.howstuffworks.com/area-51.htm. Check it out if you're bored. Kind of interesting!

Angela's Answer
Okay, gotta tell you about Angela's trick or treating and her time saving technique.
So, we go to my mom's. She gets a little box of candy with a Snoopy keychain attached to the front. My mom lives in a country area, but has close neighbors. So after we trick or treat at my mom's, we go next door to the neighbors...people I've known since I was born, but of course Angela has never seen them before in her life.
We ring the doorbell and when the neighbor lady opens the door, Angela muscles her way in, says 'hi' to the neighbor lady as she walks by, grabs a chair at their dining table and plops right down. We all watch as she sets her trick or treat pumpkin, grabs her box of candy out, and goes to work getting Snoopy off. Too funny, right? Gets better.
Mike (who was with) and I start talking with the couple and the husband asks her, "Now, what was your name again?"
"MyAngelaI'mfouryearsoldIgotoschoolhappybirthday." **in English with a Chinese little girl accent.**
She said it just like this to about 4 people that night. When we dropped her off, we told Shelly, her mom, what Angela's response was when people asked her name. Shelly just about fell off her chair laughing so hard!! It seems she learned to answer the 'what is your name' question like this because she knows that when adults ask her name they always follow up with MORE annoying questions like, 'How old are you,' and, 'Do you go to school?' This way, she answers it ALL in one very very fast sentence, so she can get back to the more important things....like getting at her Snoopy toy and candy!!

On October 22, there were only 69 days left of the year. So, today there would be 67 days left in the year. October 22 was the 296 day of the year, so today would be the 298th day...confused?? Yeah, my eyes are crossing.

My Little Friend
I have yet to mention my little friend Angela. I'm not sure why I haven't talked about her yet, but, I just have to start sharing my stories of her.
Angela is a 4 year old precocious, fiesty, gorgeous little girl with long black hair and dark brown eyes. Her parents are native of China...well, to be more specific, her mother is from Fujian, China, and her dad is from Hong Kong. They own a Chinese restaurant in a neighboring town and the food is to DIE for.
Mike and I would go to eat at the restaurant every so often. It's in the town where he works, but is 22 miles from home, so we'd go when I felt like meeting him. However, about a year ago, I met Angela for the first time. We were eating in the restaurant and here was this darling little Chinese girl. At the time, we hadn't started our adoption in Vietnam, and I was still fixated on the wait for our China adoption. Of course Angela caught my eye because of her heritage, and because she was just so darn cute!!!
She was too shy to come over and visit that first time, but I was smitten. ;) Mike and I would go eat there and we started talking to Angela and her mom. I quickly told Shelly (Angela's mom) that we were adopting....explaining as best as I could that I wasn't some crazed stalker weirdo type person. Mike and I just kept coming in every now and again and got to know them quite well. Not only was I taken with Angela, but with her whole family.
Angela's family is opening a new restaurant in the same town, so everyone is horrendously busy. They are still running the current restaurant, and renovating a huge storefront on the main street, which will be a Chinese/American buffet. Shelly had wanted to send Angela to stay with Angela's grandma in China during this busy time, but it just never worked. Which made me happy! My little friend would have been gone for months! Not only that, but Angela's first language is Chinese. I personally think she would have lost a lot of the English she has learned, having gone to China for several months.
Since they are so busy right now, (and I am not) :) I have started going there several times a week to watch Angela and help out. My friendship with this wonderful family has grown 100 fold. I try to help Angela learn more English, write her letters and numbers, color, cut paper (her favorite...don't ask me why...), teach her some American kid's games, dance, get out of the restaurant on sunny days, watch movies, and have the time of my life. Mike comes, too, for lunch, and dinner. Good thing we love Chinese food!!! For a man who was hesitant to have kids....man....they are so cute together. He teases her, and her temper flares, but he is so incredibly patient with her. I'll have to write another blog just on those two together.
The main reason I had to finally post about my little friend is because of something that hit me the other day when I was with her. I usually try to bring her a little somthin' somthin', whether it's a color book, or a toy, or paper, whatever. Sometimes I'll pick her up a DVD. Last Friday was rainy and cold, so I bought her the Disney classic, "The Little Mermaid."
I think sometimes I take it for granted that all kids know about Cinderella, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, etc. I was literally brought to tears on Friday when I watched the movie with her. Angela had never heard of Ariel or Flounder and Sebastian before. She was absolutely enthralled and mesmorized. It still brings tears to my eyes....I think because I was so lucky to be able to experience this child's absolute wonderment and share in a new experience for her. I guess that sounds corny, and it's hard to explain. But, I'll tell you, it felt good.
Well, I could go on and on about Angela and her family, and I'll probably share more stories about her now. Today we danced and laughed and drank a glass of ice water with two straws. We cut out pumpkins, colored pictures, and her mom thought we were both crazy. And, sitting there with my hair in pigtails, cutting out paper fish, I probably DID look crazy. But, come Wednesday, when I walk in that door and I'm pelted with a flying Angela hug and kisses, I don't care if I looked like the biggest weirdo on the planet. It's all worth it. :)

The legendary actress and siren Mae West acted in her last film, "Sextette" at age 85.
Mae West (August 17, 1893 – November 22, 1980) was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter, and sex symbol. Famous for her bawdy double entendres, West made a name for herself in vaudeville and on the legitimate stage in New York before moving to Hollywood to become a comedian, actress and writer in the motion picture industry. One of the most controversial stars of her day, West encountered many problems including censorship.
When her cinematic career ended, she continued to perform on stage, in Las Vegas, in the United Kingdom, on radio and television, and recorded Rock and Roll albums.
The famous Mae West quip "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?", often varied to "Is that a banana in your pocket . . .", is accurately attributed to her. She made this remark in February 1936, at the train station in Los Angeles upon her return from Chicago, when a Los Angeles police officer was assigned to escort her home.[2] She first delivered the line on film in My Little Chickadee, and again to George Hamilton in her last movie, Sextette. It is one of the most quoted lines in movie history.

You know the term, to 86 something? "I eighty-sixed the burnt pot roast" - that kind of thing? Well, here's a bit of trivia about where that phrase came from:

Today is my husband's and my 8th wedding anniversary! Yep, eight years ago today I married the goofiest, wackiest, sweetest, most unique person in the world. He's kind and generous, ornery and tempermental, patient and loveable, big and silly, intelligent and curious, egotistical and hard-headed, romantic and loving. He's all that and so much more, and I love him for it.
We had an interesting wedding October 2, 1999. Our minister up and left town one week before our wedding. Luckily, there was a replacement, a woman minister from another town I had never met before. She turned out to be nice, but, not what I expected. And there was a huge big scandal regarding the whole leaving town thing. Just what I needed before our wedding!! Oh, did I mention I was working at the church at the time??? That time was the final thing I needed to teach me that organized religion is just not my bag.
But, back to our wedding! Our music was prerecorded and a friend was singing. The person who was supposed to run our recording couldn't make it and another person stepped in. Did it work? Nope. The tape was playing and no one was singing and the minister finally had to step in and ask the guy to rewind and replay. Sigh.
After the wedding, we had an old antique car to drive us from the church to our reception, about 12 miles away. We were a bit worried at times it wasn't going to get us there. Can we say....backfire?? Sigh again.
I wanted ONE special song for us to dance to that night...."Beauty and the Beast." We get there and our DJ can't find the song. My niece ran home to her house, about 3 blocks away, got her CD player and a Disney CD so our first dance could be that song. The ONLY song I had specified. So, our first dance was a good 30 minutes late as we scrambled to find the song, try to find a different song, and then had Samantha save the day with her Sony. Double sigh.
But, the absolute KICKER, and I saved the best for last, was during the actual wedding ceremony. We had a unity candle. Now, since I had worked at the church, I had heard countless times from the minister never ever to pre-light the candles, as they won't light well for the actual wedding. But, as you recall, he left town on me. So, the new minister made me light the candles the night before during our rehearsal. Fine. During our ceremony, we went up to light our unity candle. Now, the main candle was in a very nice, etched with our names and date and a cute little picture, glass cylander vase. This was placed on a candle stand. And, since at rehearsal, it didn't look too stable, we secured it with some sticky goo stuff...like the kind of stuff you stick posters up with. Well, as I was saying we went up to light our candle. Mike and I each took our little tapers and went to light the main one. Only, the main candle wouldn't light. It just kept pooling up with wax. (Because we lit it the night before!!!). As our soloist was finishing up, and we just kept standing there trying to light the damn thing, Mike takes the glass cylander down and holds it, we get the freaking candle lit, and he places the cylander back on the stand. Only now, the sticky goo is no longer pressed on, holding it on the stand. We go back to the altar and a minute later........BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cylander crashes to the floor, shattering into a bazillion pieces, a friend of mine sitting in the front pew tries to make a dive for it...misses...yells out 'SHIT!' (although I didn't hear that, and I love you for it, Nik!!!!!). The minister covers by saying, "This is NOT a sign." Oy.
So, to say the least, it was an eventful wedding. However, I guess all the little things made it all the more memorable!
Happy Anniversary, Darling. It's been 8 years, and I wish for 80 more.

Meet 98-Year-Old Actress Mae Laborde who started acting when she was 93.
LOS ANGELES (May 28, 2007) -- Anyone who says you’re too old to do anything needs to meet 98-year-old actress Mae Laborde who at 93 decided she wanted to become an actress so she went out and did just that.
“Because of my age, I thought, ‘I think I’ll go back to work. That will be unusual,’” she told Access Hollywood.
And just like that, a star was born.
“I had two auditions in two weeks,” she said. “But it isn’t steady [work] of course.”
No one said it would be easy, but at 98 Mae Laborde is unique among the Hollywood crowd.
“I have six great grandchildren,” she noted.
As Mae found out in being cast for the comedy “The Pineapple Express,” age does have its privileges.
“I did not have to go for an audition. They said ‘we want Mae, we saw her picture in a pile of the LA casting office,’ and they called my agent and said ‘send Mae directly to the shoot. That happened twice,” she told Access.
Born in 1909, Mae and her late husband Nicholas were married for 49 years. She still lives in the same Santa Monica, California house they shared since 1935.

Wow, it seems as if this week is flying by! You know what else flew by? My time in college. I happened to graduate from college in '97. I went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. When I went to school, the internet and email were just getting up-to-speed and no one carried around cell phones.
How the heck did we live?????? ha! I guess now I can tell our little one about the 'good old days'...

And what shall we learn today about 105? It is the prison cell where Doctor Manette lived, in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.
Huh...all I know about that novel is that it was both the best and the worst of times. Ha! Perhaps I should read that one. I bet THAT would kill some time!!!

Here's a shameless plug....
As an adoption fundraiser, my family and I have been working together and handcrafting several different items. I will be listing them over the next several days on eBay. There are already quite a few things listed for sale, and they are very nice items. I have a talented family!
